Marine Science

Pacific Northwest marine biologists have benefitted from our experience with complex system and acoustic receiver designs. Over the past 12 years, we have evolved tools for locating, tracking and counting salmon and other aquatic species.

JSATS Autonomous Receiver

Teknologic has developed several forms of Juvenile Salmon Acoustic Telemetry System (JSATS) Autonomous Receivers. Our most recent design incorporates a long life node with acoustic telemetry and built-in acoustic release.

  • Demonstrated detection and decoding range performance up to 300 meters
  • Over 60 days of autonomous operation in a 36 pound package
  • In-service status monitoring and control via a portable topside acoustic telemetry link

For more information, view our AR brochure.

JSATS Cabled Columbia Estuary Array

Teknologic developed key subsystems and software of a NOAA cabled acoustic salmon censusing system.

  • PSK acoustic transmission decode algorithm development
  • Fiber-optic real-time telemetry design
  • Shore station power system design
  • Shore station system monitoring and data logging software

Teknologic’s experience with acoustics, ocean engineering, telemetry/logging systems made us a valued design resource and the manufacturer of the core electronics of more than 22 deployed receivers.

JSATS 3D Tracking System

Our engineering team developed the first autonomous receiver-based 3D system for tracking locations of JSATS implanted salmon.

  • Location and tracks produced with sub-meter accuracy
  • Complex algorithm development to identify range, bearing, and depth of low repetition acoustic signals
  • Capable of monitoring a 350 x 350 m volume with 9 ARs and a resync projector for over 60 days (no cables required)

Teknologic’s experience with acoustic positioning systems and the development of JSATS receivers with high precision clocks provides a tag locations database ready for use in GIS applications.

JSATS Topside System

Teknologic’s Autonomous Receiver (AR) is designed to support communication from a surface craft to the deployed ARs with this system.

  • Uses an acoustic telemetry modem that is lowered into the water from a workboat
  • Allows the user to check status, set sonar parameters, and release the AR from its bottom anchor
  • Operational range is over 1000 feet

Teknologic provides reliable ancillary systems to support their JSATS core technologies.

JSATS 3D Mobile Tracking System

Our engineering team developed the first 3D system for locating JSATS implanted salmon and outfitted the system on a NOAA marine vessel.

  • Conceptual design and analysis of vessel installation issues
  • Complex algorithm development to identify range, bearing, and depth of low repetition acoustic signals
  • LabWindows CVI operator console user interface and data logging software design

Teknologic’s experience with acoustic positioning systems and the development of JSATS receivers made us the only team capable of rapidly developing this complex system.

JSATS Tag Reader System

Our engineering team developed the first reliable tag reading system for verification of tag IDs in the juvenile salmon implant surgery line.

  • A fast, accurate display of the tag’s unique hex ID and associated PRI
  • This system was integrated with the PTAGIS database allowing users to input the acquired ID without human error
  • Tags IDs and PRI were typically recognized after the second tag transmission

Teknologic’s experience with the development of JSATS receivers made us the only team capable of rapidly developing this PC-based study support equipment.

JSATS Portable Receiver

Teknologic developed portable systems to support tag censusing prior to fish release, tag life test studies and for workboat over the side tag detection.

  • Based on our low-power JSATS receiver design
  • Logs and displays detections in real-time on a USB connected computer
  • Operators can control the acoustic parameters (e.g., detection threshold) in real time via a easy to use GUI

Teknologic is able to recommend and create new JSATS study support tools quickly as result of working directly in the field with the fish biologists.
